Onboarding Language Assistants

Welcome to our summercamp season!

Welcome to our camp! We’re really happy that you are interessted in our camp. We offer an amazing opportunity to teach English in the great outdoors. It’s fun for the kids, and our language assistants love the experience so much that many come back year after year.

Where  we are!

Our Camp Location is a youth hostel with about 100 beds, situated at the start of the Gunzesried Valley, surrounded by mountains, lakes and forrests.

Jugendhaus Elias is a charming and welcoming hostel nestled in the picturesque region of Allgäu, Germany. The hostel is designed to provide a comfortable and enjoyable stay for all its guests, it has an indoor gym, outdoor sportscourts, a disco room, loads of individual group rooms, a table tennis room and a pool table room. This offers loads of opportunities to offer activities to our campers.

The language assistants will be staying in nice ensuite rooms, usually 2 – 3 people sharing a room. The hostel offers really nice food, however, it isn’t great with vegan food, so if you are vegan it’s helpful to bring your own favourite spreads (for sandwiches) and snacks.

You can find our camp location here:

Jugendhaus Elias

Closest train station for Jugendhaus Elias it is Blaichach or Immenstadt station.

From Munich airport it takes about 3hours to get there, from Memmingen aiport it is 1,4 hours (Ryan Air Only). You can also fly into Zurich, just book trains in advance.

Accommodation before camp and Arrival

We will provide food and accommodation during the camp but we are happy to host you at our family home a day before camp if that helps with your travel arrangements. Our first Camp starts (3. – 9. of august) starts on sunday at 4 pm and finishes on the saturday at 10 am. Make sure you plan plenty of time (check the DB navigator app) to get to your airport.

To plan your trains in Germany use the DB Navigator App or Trainline.

 Getting there

Memmingen Airport (Ryan Air) and Munich Airport are the closest airports – both airports are about 3 hours from our hostels by public transport. Just be aware that with some evening flights you might not get here  – the last train from Munich leaves at 8pm. (It’s one hour from the airport to the train station). There is also Zurich airport, sometimes it has the cheaper flighst.

Closest station for our summercamps is Blaichach station, on the same trainline you get off at Immenstadt station (one stop beforehand) to get to mine!

Getting from Sprachcamp to the Airport

Most camps finish in the morning of the last day, you can leave anytime after that.

There is a Bayern ticket within Bavaria, that allows you to travel within all of Bavaria – and share with up to 5 people. There might also be a 49 Euro ticket – check with me or the Deutsche Bahn about special offers. There isn’t a special discount if you book in advance, unless it is long distance travel.

Roles and Responsiblities

You will be shadowing one of our qualified outdoor instructors, helping to run a group of about 12 kids. You are there to help kids practice their English and just talk to them. You will get the chance to learn about our lanugae teaching methods, Outdoor Education  and you will probably pick up loads more games and problem solving tasks along the way.

We have one movie project where you’d be running your own group of kids of 6, supporting them with their story line, the dialogues and the filming.

We always have Juniors (11 – 12 year olds) and Seniors (13 – 15 year olds) at our camp. They run in separate groups during the day, but we do spend about an hour per day in the evening to have one activitiy together.

Games

We do run evening programms for our kids each night. It’s always nice if you can offer an activity that you really like, i.e. capture the flag, a beach volleyball tournement, table tennis rouners, football, frisby,….

If you are interessted to get to know some of our  team and board games that we run during the day, have a look here:

Team Games (Problem solving) we might play:

Word Games / Icebreaker Games with focus on Speaking English

For debriefs: Picture / Emotioncards

Here is our manual for the camp. It is quite an extensive collection of team games and English language games: Sprachcamp Manual
